Volunteer Opportunities

The Art Institute welcomes dedicated, reliable, and energetic individuals who would like to experience this world-famous institution from the inside—as a volunteer! Join the over 800 volunteers who help make the museum feel like home to members and visitors from across the world.
A young woman talks to two others about work in the collection.

If you join now, you can participate during the groundbreaking exhibitions Manet and Modern Beauty (May 26–September 8) and Andy Warhol: From A and B and Back Again (October 20–January 26.)

Visitor Engagement Volunteers
The Art Institute is dedicated to providing a world-class visitor experience. With this in mind, and our public contact volunteers are one of our most important resources.

Enthusiastic and outgoing, visitor engagement volunteers are the face of the museum to both our members and the public. They make sure that everyone who walks through our doors is greeted warmly and has the most up-to-date information available about the museum, our collections and programs, and the city of Chicago. There are two categories of these volunteers:

Greeter Volunteers
Our greeter corps is responsible for sharing information about the museum in a unique and authentic way, much as someone would with friends and family. These individuals need to have the ability to be physically active for a shift of three to four hours; exhibit excellent interpersonal and customer engagement skills; and have the ability to represent the museum in a positive way. Being multilingual is a plus.

This spring, summer, and fall our greeters will be even busier, helping us to manage the visitor lines at both the Manet and Warhol exhibitions.

Information Volunteers
Information volunteers help at the various information desks/kiosks located throughout the museum. Volunteers at these stations are able to sit down for periods of time, but an active engagement with our visitors is encouraged. Computer and iPad experience and phone skills are required.

Special Exhibition Hosts
This special group of volunteers will help greet, orient, and inform visitors who are here to experience our two upcoming special ticketed exhibitions, Manet and Modern Beauty and Andy Warhol: From A and B and Back Again.

Training for all visitor experience volunteers consists of two half-days followed by three mentoring sessions.
